  2. Expectation and dread, or "The Wheel of Time" is going to be a tv series Expectation and dread, or "The Wheel of Time" is going to be a tv series

So The Wheel of Time is going to be a TV series. There is no other story that I have as much history with. I started reading it over 25 years ago, when I was 13. It was my Harry Potter. I read it through all of high school and university and then, like many people, I took an extended break at around book 9, before coming back two years ago, rereading the whole thing, and going on to finish it. More than that, The Wheel of Time was my introduction to online fandom, back at the old WoTism boards. In a way, I might not be quite who or what I am today if not for The Wheel of Time.

I'm going to be trying to get down quick reactions to stuff from now on, instead of mulling things over so much that I end up... not posting. Anyway. Asylum of the Daleks. Doctor Who's triumphant return to tv.

  6. The Legend of Korra, up to episode 6 The Legend of Korra, up to episode 6

Yes, I'm slow. Shut up. :D (Actually, I watched the first four episodes as they aired, then fell behind. But then, I watched Avatar The Last Airbender after the whole thing had aired, so...) All in all, enjoying The Legend of Korra so far. It both feels reminiscent of Avatar while being very much its own thing. I find the choice of conflict very intriguing because... well, yes, Our Heroes are benders, and they are great, and we like benders since Avatar, but on the other hand, the Equalists have a point in the fact that this is a world in which the division between benders and non-benders has generated a, shall we say, not ideal society. I also really liked the fact that the early episodes were so willing to point out that Korra was sheltered and privileged, and thus doesn't start the series being capable of healing the rift that the Equalists are mining.

  7. Blackwater reactions Blackwater reactions

Staying with the Battle of Blackwater for the entire episode was a bold choice, considering the usual structure of most episodes of Game of Thrones, but it payed off, and seriously... they couldn't really cut away to f*cking Qarth in the middle of the battle for a a round of WHERE ARE MY DRAGONS!!!1!, could they? Anyway. Reaction time! (Contains hints about events in books beyond A Clash of Kings)

  8. Catching up with Mad Men's Joan and Peggy Catching up with Mad Men's Joan and Peggy

Got caught up on a month's worth of Mad Men yesterday. Among the many things one could say about the show, the thing that stood out to me was just how much I enjoy Joan and Peggy's scenes.

  9. Game of Thrones: The Old Gods and the New Game of Thrones: The Old Gods and the New

Well, that's probably the most deviations from the books' plot in a single episode of Game of Thrones. Now, I'm not saying that's bad. In general I've been fairly satisfied with the changes to the story (with one admittedly very subjective exception). It is an adaptation, and those books are long, the plot is very complicated, and in general I think the changes have been understandable and have made for a better TV series than if it had remained unchanged. But seeing as there were quite a few changes, I thought it'd be interesting to dissect them. (Needless to say, spoilers! Although I do try to be vague about book stuff).

  10. Fierce, fabulous Joan Fierce, fabulous Joan

I don't usually blog about Mad Men, in large part because I find that other people usually say whatever I might have said and more, but I just have to comment on Mystery Date, episode 3 (or 4, technically) of season 5.

  11. Now leaving the darkest timeline Now leaving the darkest timeline

How long has it been since Regional Holiday Music? Almost exactly three months, right? Way too long in any case, but Community is finally back. I've missed these characters and this show so much. Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts was one of the more "normal" Community episodes, and while I do think that you need episodes like this to balance out blanket forts and zombie apocalypses, I also find it really amusing that this episode also contained an entire subplot about how if weirdness is in your nature you should embrace it and not try to be normal (hard not to take Troy and Abed's subplot as meta commentary, isn't it?).

  12. There's something to be said for Spooks' practical and direct approach There's something to be said for Spooks' practical and direct approach

Recently I've been rewatching season 2 of Alias, and I also went back to watching Spooks, and watching both shows so close together really highlights the contrasts.

  13. The Doctor's farewell tour: 'Closing Time' The Doctor's farewell tour: 'Closing Time'

One of the things I love about Doctor Who is that even when you know something is coming, it still surprises you.

  14. Doctor Who: The God Complex Doctor Who: The God Complex

The fact that being the Doctor's companion quite often is a curse disguised as a blessing is something that has been explored before in Doctor Who. Moffat has been toying with it all along, and I really like how it all comes to a head in this episode, how the 11th Doctor has to face that truth and do something about it.

  15. "Back to Where You've Never Been" promo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndRvTDWMEc8 Lincoln Lee meeting himself? Charlie? Fauxlivia? Judging by the promo, Back to Where You've Never Been will be awesome.

  16. Fringe's Garden of Forking Paths Fringe's Garden of Forking Paths

A lot of people have felt that Fringe has not been at its best this season, for various reasons. One specific complaint has been about spending time in a world in which the fact that Peter Bishop drowned in Reiden Lake rendered everyone slightly different from the versions we know. Not radically different, as in Earth 2, but still not quite the same. When introducing Fauxlivia and Walternate's world, Fringe had the advantage of stepping into a world that was very clearly, very obviously, different from ours. Blimps in the sky. The World Trade Center still standing. Olivia's red hair. Everything about the world said, this is different, and the audience could approach it as such. The problem facing Fringe this season is that we have no clear indicators of how to approach the reality we're watching. Neither Here Nor There indeed. The problem has been, I suppose, that we weren't quite sure whether we were supposed to take this as OUR Earth, rendered different enough for it to be unfamiliar after whatever Peter did, or as an entirely different timeline. I think the writers definitely knew all along, but we didn't, and I think it's caused a certain unease.

  19. Doctor Who rewatch: The Time of Angels Doctor Who rewatch: The Time of Angels

The first time I watched The Time of Angels, it was pretty late at night, into my initial first time marathon. Fourth episode, I was already having a great time on the series, and then I get the double punch of River Song and the horribly creepy Weeping Angels.

  20. Bit of a Doctor Who rewatch Bit of a Doctor Who rewatch

Really enjoyed this episode. It had my favorite characters doing their thing, and the title sort of directly applies to their choices and actions in the episode. They all do what they believe is the right thing to do, and it's interesting how each goes about it in a different way, and more so how it puts them at odds.

  36. Criminal Minds, season 1 Criminal Minds, season 1

Apparently after years of following mostly heavily serialized dramas and tokusatsu, I'm now all about crime procedural dramas... and House sort of counts, since House is Sherlock Holmes and all that. Anyway. I had not really watched Criminal Minds, started to, in part because a friend loves it, in part because it's after Survivor, now that Survivor is back on Wednesdays. And as I tend to do when I like a show that's already been running several seasons, I've gone back to watch older episodes, and I just finished season 1.

  41. Chuck season 4 premiere Chuck season 4 premiere

Been computerless since Friday. Logic board is fried, yay, and it will be a week and a half before it's fixed. Anyway, makes blogging hard. However, I just watched the Chuck season premiere and just had to make a little post about it, because it seriously was just the definition of awesome. XD I have to admit that I have a complicated relationship with Chuck in that whenever I'm actually watching I invariably love it, but sometimes, I don't know, I forget that, get behind and end up losing track of the story. I actually didn't watch about half of last season, although I did watch the finale. I thought the twist with Mama Bartowski was intriguing; being a huge Alias fan, I invariably compared it to the SpyMommy, Irina Derevko, and was interested to see what Chuck did to differentiate Mama B from Irina (or alternatively to play homage to her, because that is a big part of Chuck). Anyway, I've been keeping up with casting spoilers, so I know about Linda Hamilton as Mama Bartowski, which I have to admit was great casting. After watching the first episode, may I just say that so far the execution does fulfill the promise of the casting, and Mama B is one badass broad. Well done, Chuck. I am definitely on for the ride this season. Although the search for her drove the episode, as it reportedly will drive the season, the woman herself was only onscreen a short time... the rest of the episode, however, was equally awesome.

  42. Laurie and Cumberbatch in Fortysomething Laurie and Cumberbatch in Fortysomething

Been watching Fortysomething, because I was looking for more Cumberbatch, and it's got him and Hugh Laurie, so how could I refuse?

  43. Sherlock recs! Sherlock recs!

It has been a long long time since a show has grabbed my attention the way Sherlock has, to the point that I've been completely neglecting, well, pretty much anything that is not Sherlock related. So I thought I'd just rec links related to this awesome little show that has pretty much just eaten my brain the past few weeks.

  44. "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship" "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship"

This is an extremely belated post about A Study In Pink, which means that it's actually more about the episode in the context to the rest of the series. Really, if you start thinking about the fact that there will be more Sherlock in the future, then it's easy to guess that eventually we'll look back on these episodes and that primarily all three, not just the first one, are about how Sherlock and John's very unique relationship began and started to develop. It's actually so obvious that it might not even merit mentioning, except for how in the course of just three it begins, grows, changes, starts to crack around the edges, and ultimately deepens so much.

  45. "A Study In Pink" screencaps

So I went and decided to just do a quick check to see what there was in the way of Sherlock fanfic, and four days later I've neglected this blog in favor of reading MOAR FIC. To make up for it... screencaps from A Study In Pink! By which I mostly mean lots of Benedict Cumberbatch, because, well, yes.

  49. White Collar 2x04: By The Book White Collar 2x04: By The Book

I actually watched this a couple of nights ago, but hadn't goten around to posting about it. My bad. In this episode, Peter and Neal (and Peter-and-Neal) take a backseat to let Mozzie shine for an episode. Which is great, because Willie Garson is just amazing as Mozzie, and he's consistently the most quoteable character on the show (and the first scene culminates in one such quote :D).

  50. Shiny new Sherlock Holmes Shiny new Sherlock Holmes

So the plan yesterday was to catch up on this week's White Collar, but it didn't end up happening because I was distracted by a shiny new object. Shiny new object being the BBC's Sherlock. \:D/ Anyway, I watched the first episode at lunch, and loved it so much that when I got home I watched it again instead of watching White Collar (I will catch up on it! After I watch Sherlock ep 2!). For those that live under a rock (like me, actually, I didn't even know about this until Dimmie told me about it), Sherlock is a BBC re-imagining of, obviously, Sherlock Holmes, written by Steven Moffat (of the latest Doctor Who). It's set in present day London, and just-discharged army doctor John Watson is feeling meh in general about civilian life (his therapist thinks he's traumatized by the war in Afghanistan and that he should start a blog to get it all out) and looking for a place to live, which is not easy in London with an army pension, and he figures no one will want to share a flat with him. So of course a mutual friend introduces him to someone else that is having a hard time finding a flatmate... a "consulting detective" and self-described "high-functioning sociopath".

  51. Copycat Caffrey Copycat Caffrey

So that's two White Collar episodes in a row that I'd describe as awesome. :D/ In this one it was in large part due to Neal's unabashed glee at what is going on; first at someone copycatting him, and then even more so at learning that criminology students are studying him... spending an entire week on him, in fact. And also Peter's reaction to all this ("He's gonna be impossible after this").

  52. "Need to know": Peter and Neal "Need to know": Peter and Neal

So the other things that made me love this ep are Mozzie and Peter's scavenger hunt, because it was awesome from start to finish, and then the myriad little details expanding and shaping Neal and Peter's relationship and showing it for what it is.

  53. “Need To Know” reaction post 1: Diana “Need To Know” reaction post 1: Diana

I realize this is premature, but I have this urge to call this the best episode of White Collar so far. At very least, potentially my favorite, because it had so many delicious character moments, and it was just so much fun. And Diana is the first thing that comes to mind that made the episode great.

  58. Three scenes from Covert Affairs Three scenes from Covert Affairs

Covert Affairs starts next Tuesday on USA, and I'm actually really excited because I love the spy genre, and also because I already like both Chris Gorham (loved him in Popular, never actually watched Ugly Betty, though) and Sendhil Ramamurthy (who deserved better than Heroes ever gave him, in my opinion). At any rate, three scenes from the pilot are up on the show's YouTube channel. :D

  59. So, about Irina Derevko...

So the impromptu Alias marathon is going along way faster than I expected it to, and last night I watched the season 2 premiere, The Enemy Walks In. The enemy being, of course, one Irina Derevko. So this seems like a good time to pause and post about something I've been thinking about since I rewatched episode 11, The Confession, in which Sydney first learns the truth about her mother. And basically what I've been thinking is more than any single other element, more than even Sydney herself, it's Irina that truly defined Alias.

  60. Been rewatching Alias for the past week
