The Double
Currently watching Finished The Double. Yes, a year late, I know.
(Started at the beginning of October, finished last Saturday).
Anyway, I love it. I love the camp and the drama, and the story is quite interesting too. Curious about the novel.
Another thing is, I've seen Wang Xingyue in a couple of other things already, in The Story of Kunning Palace he was fine, but not the type of character I'm into particularly. In Perfect Match I found him very charming and likable, and now in this one I've come to really like him. He makes a great ML. I think I'll look for The Wanted Detective after I'm done.
And Duke Su, as a character, he's so extra, I love him.
On the topic of Perfect Match, I finished it just before this one, it's really amusing to come to this and see Shen Ruyong and Jiang Ruyao, after their actors played such different characters in this one.
ETA after finishing:
The female antagonists/villains in this show are really well done! The Eldest Princess in particular, she's a horrible terrible person, but she's super interesting and human, and you understand and feel for her even as you continue to acknowledge she is a terrible person. The detail with Xue Fangfei drugging her into a fake pregnancy was an interesting. From what I've been told/read, in the novel she doesn't want the baby, so I find it to be an interesting, bold choice to change that: it makes the Princess more sympathetic (or understandable?) while having the female lead's action be unabiguously cruel. Nuance is nice.
If I have one complaint about this drama it's that some of the deaths felt unnecessary, especially considering they didn't happen in the book. Tong'er, early on. But especially Li Ji and Wen Ji at the very end. Why??
On the topic of those two at the end, Li Ji's death in particular, and Wen Ji's reaction felt extremely shippy. To the point where I just have to wonder if it was all on purpose. Kill them so you can hint they are gay at the eleventh hour. Is that very tinhatty? It was just extremely shippy.
Overall, however, great, entertaining drama. There were a few things along the way that required suspension of logic, but overall I have very few complaints. I enjoyed seeing Xue Fangfei kicking ass and taking names, and I enjoyed her relationship with Duke Su, it was fun and flirty.
